В середине XII века, покорив заморские земли и не обнаружив там ничего примечательного, кроме голубиной почты, Европа встрепенулась от известия, что византийский император Мануил получил послание от самого пресвитера Иоанна, правителя Трех Индий, наместника святого Фомы, повелителя семидесяти двух царей и бесчисленного множества народов: амазонок, брахманов, фавнов, сатиров и пигмеев. Говорят, что у пресвитера была хрустальная часовня, способная, изменяясь в размерах, вместить всех желающих, и ветряная мельница, которая не то что муку мелет, а сама хлеб печет. Образ идеального, совершенного Индийского царства не оставлял в покое воображение: по мнению одних, эта страна была расположена в Эфиопии, другие считали Иоанна наместником трех волхвов, третьи и вовсе пытались доказать, что с пресвитером расправились не то монголы, не то ужасные племена Гога и Магога. Версии выдвигались разные, но это не помешало римским папам неоднократно пытаться вступить с правителем истинно Вымышленного царства в переписку.
«Послания из вымышленного царства» – книга, собравшая под своей обложкой все предания о Великой Индии – вымышленном царстве пресвитера Иоанна. Владения христианского царя, расположенные, как полагали в Средневековье, где-то между Великой степью и Страною шелка, были наполнены всевозможными чудесами, немыслимыми чудовищами и фантастическими зверями. Богатство пресвитера Иоанна веками волновало и завораживало путешественников, по поскольку царство обнаружить не удалось, говорили, что оно было захвачено татарами. Вот откуда появились у них силы совершить Великий поход на Запад с целью отобрать у европейцев мощи Волхвов – легендарных основателей держаны пресвитера Иоанна.
