Эта книга не выходила на русском языке, хотя была написана достаточно давно - в 2003 году. Она посвящена интересной теме, которая, к сожалению, редко затрагивается в отечественной научно-популярной литературе: судьбе странных и неуклюжих птиц, которые открывают "чёрный список" видов животных, вымерших по вине человека с 1600 года - дронтов. Но стиль изложения автора значительно отличается от привычного. Вместо краткого описания биологии этих птиц автор рисует нам портрет дронтов "нa фоне пейзажа", рассказывая об исторических и культурных событиях, которые прямо или косвенно затрагивали судьбу этих птиц, чаще всего оказывая, увы, резко негативное воздействие на самих птиц и на среду их обитания. Читатели книги узнают о том, почему португальцы оказались в Индийском океане и как открыли Маскаренские острова, как дронт попал в зверинец императора-алхимика Рудольфа II, как художник Руландт Саверей запечатлел эту невероятную птицу на холсте, как дронт вымер во второй раз в сознании людей, скольких усилий стоило доказать, что эта птица действительно жила на Земле, и почему на родном Маврикии её начисто забыли.
С момента выхода книги в свет прошло уже достаточно много времени, и в отношении дронтов были сделаны новые открытия, которые по понятным причинам не попали в книгу. Но материалы, которые собраны в книге, уже стали частью истории науки. Эту книгу с одинаковым интересом прочтут любители биологии, истории и изобразительного искусств.
