Как христианизировать войну? Как обеспечить себе вооруженную силу, склонную верно и постоянно стоять на защите христианства и выполнять свою миссию борьбы с неверными? На два этих вопроса средневековое христианство ответило, создав, не без некоторого сопротивления, оригинальные институты — военно-монашеские ордены. Гибриды «чудовищ», по выражению Исаака Стеллы, живущих, как монахи, по уставу — бенедиктинскому или августинскому, но не совсем монахов, действующих, как рыцари, но не по образу тех представителей аристократической касты, которые всегда готовы схватиться между собой, не мирских рыцарей, поносимых святым Бернардом, а рыцарей Христа, «облаченных в доспехи из железа и доспехи веры». Реконкиста и крестовые походы способствовали тому, что эти ордены широко распространились в Святой земле, в Испании и на берегах Балтийского моря. По мере укрепления независимости монархий от папской власти, растущего недоверия монархов к этим военным силам, порой ставшим настоящими государствами, по мере того как служение миссии все больше подменялось простой воинственностью, военно-монашеские ордены понемногу теряли жизнеспособность и были вынуждены вновь обратиться к благотворительной деятельности. Тогда родились легенды и слухи, которые разоблачает современный историк, в то же время отдавая справедливость этим ярким свидетельствам коллективного воображения средневековых людей, сделав прекрасный обзор этих легенд.
