В ней описываются пути и способы, с помощью которых советские граждане пытались вести обычную жизнь в необычных условиях, созданных сталинизмом, а также рисуется портрет нарождающегося социального типа homo soveticus, для которого сталинизм был естественной средой обитания. Данная работа, в которой рассматривается городская жизнь, является логическим продолжением книги Ш.Фицпатрик «Сталинские крестьяне. Социальная история Советской России в 30-е годы: деревня» (М., 2001).
