Несмотря на недолговечность своего двухлетнего правления, Ричард III (1452-1485) стал одним из самых известных британских монархов. Шекспир и Томас Мор изображали его физическим и нравственным уродом, жестоким тираном, убившим ради власти множество людей, включая своих малолетних племянников. Современные ученые внесли в этот образ серьезные коррективы: по их мнению, большинство обвинений в адрес монарха придумано его противниками, а сам Ричард был незаурядным политиком, которому Англия во многом обязана переходом от Средневековья к Новому времени. Эти выводы поддерживает историк Вадим Устинов, создавший первое на русском языке жизнеописание Ричарда III в контексте английской и европейской истории XV столетия.
